Houston Initiative Components
Start With You – A formal event which showcases the programming efforts of the Organization while celebrating youth. An opportunity for sponsors and community members alike to come together to
share the vision of Demere Houston and meet the impacted youth while learning more about the program and ways to support the Initiative.
MY BLOCK
Rep Your School – An annual event created for teen’s athletes and their peers to actively participate and compete in a non-intimidating positive atmosphere. Additionally this event connects the youth to mentors and various programs associated with school engagement, resources, high quality after-school and summer programs, healthcare organizations, as well as connecting with organizations designed to improve family functioning.
LET'S TALK
My Block – A component of the Initiative design to encourage youth and young adults to see the beauty in their own neighborhood while discovering the beauty within themselves as well; Inclusive in the component is a service oriented task which provides the youth and young adults an opportunity to become vested in their own communities by giving back and seeing the differences
made as a result of their efforts.
Let’s Talk – A component of the Initiative that brings together youth within high schools twice a month. To discuss topics such as school, relationships, careers, health and any other student identified as well as unidentified issues. The discussions are facilitated by the program coordinator and a peer mediator assistant.
COLLEGE TOUR
The College Tour – component is an annual trip to participating colleges and universities. It was designed on the idea that the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that extra. Demere Houston Initiative for Change wants youth and young adults to have the ability to overcome their circumstances and succeed by being exposed to trips of various places.
These trips will allow them to see the possibilities that potentially may be closer in their own grasps if they reach for them, especially those youth that have never left the state of Ohio. The annual College Tour will provide students with the exposure, confidence and knowledge needed to seek out and apply themselves at a higher level.
